World Tour GPS Tracking

Whilst on the world tour which Helen, Adam and myself were on, I decided to use my Garmin GPS to track where we drove. This went (mostly) well and I managed to create some very nice images from the tracks using an online tool called GPSVisualizer.

Tumbling shares - but so what?

As I’m sure everyone is aware, the main news at the moment is the so called “credit crunch” which is happening all over the world. I’ve been following it with interest because I’ve always had an interest in economics, but it has come at a very apt time for me because I’m just having to [...]

MacBook wireless dropout (POSSIBLE FIX)

Ever since I upgraded to the latest Leopard release the other week, my MacBook has had random wireless dropouts. It’s been an intermittent issue and has only affected my MacBook and not the iBook (PowerPC) or Mac Mini (Intel) in the house.
I’d been trying various things to get it fixed like changing the security settings [...]

Linux: Gentoo, Ubuntu; Or maybe Apple?

When I first started with Linux I found it hard to find a decent distribution because most seemed to have complicated package managers which made it hard to install a program due to dependency issues. However I found Gentoo which seemed to fulfil what I needed.
Gentoo is a great Linux distribution because it uses a [...]

Ubuntu 8.04: Hardy Heron

About a month ago I was deciding what to do with my old desktop machine which seems to have been used very little since I got my MacBook. I had Gentoo (a Linux distribution) on there, but I decided to install Ubuntu along side to see what it’s like, as I had heard good things [...]

The Women

Again this was dissapointing although I wasnt really particularly excited about it anyway. It was actually probably just what I expected. Some funny moments, some not so funny moments. A bit boring, but occasionally entertaining. I got it for free, wouldnt have paid!

Pineapple Express

I think I was a little disappointed by this I mean it was funny but I had heard so many great things I thought it would be hilarious. It was very American funny, a bit slow at the beginning and definatly in the realm of entirely silly which can be funny to a point but [...]

First days at Senokian

I started my job at Senokian yesterday and it’s been a very fun couple of days so far! I’ve been getting into one project and will hopefully be able to get into some other projects soon, hopefully on the telephony / internet side of the company, which will be really cool.

Wii Fit Ski Jump : How to get a 400m jump

Whilst in Keswick this week, we decided to work out how the ski jump on the Wii Fit decides how far you go. It’s clear that the faster you are going, the further you go and the straighter you are whilst the air, the further you go. But it was unclear as to what the [...]

The Duchess

I had heard very mixed reviews about this, some said it was nothing but pretty and I dont see why! I loved it. Keira does her best when she is in period and she was fantastic. Ralph Fiennes was at his usual standard and the supporting cast was good. There were some very sad moments, [...]

Rocknrolla

I was excited about this one, I loved lock stock and everyone says that this was Guy Richie’s comeback. It didnt dissapoint. I am a huge Gerard Butler fan and he was fun. In fact he was one of many who were great. Very funny, very Guy Richie, very good!

Bangkok Dangerous

I felt like I had had a long dry patch in terms of my cinema intake. I havn’t really just been going about once a week but that seems very little, so I have done a blitz. Which will continue for the next few days! Unemployment is getting old!
This was a good film. Nic Cage [...]

Hellboy 2:The Golden Army

I forgot I hadnt reviewed this and it was a few weeks ago. As far as I remember it was good! Very entertaining, beautiful and exciting. One complaint is that it would have been nice to have had a bit of a break from the action. It was too entertaining, in Sarah’s words. There were [...]

Get Smart

I have just been talking about this, it is fabulous 3 star entertainment. Gently amusing with some very funny bits. Nothing fancy or particularly memorable but worth seeing if your bored or a fan of Steve Carrell. It was relaxingly amusing.

Time Machine: I’m Backing up, eventually!

I’ve been meaning to get a proper backup system going for a while now and I’ve finally done so with Leopard’s built in “Time Machine” feature. The one thing I hate about thinking about backups is that you don’t want to test your method thoroughly, as that would require you to simulate a catastrophy (i.e. [...]

Upgrading a MacBook Hard Drive

Today I embarked upon upgrading the hard drive in my MacBook because it shipped with 80gb (upgraded at the time from 60gb!) and it was becoming fuller and fuller. I had already moved my iTunes and iPhoto libraries over to an external USB drive because of lack of space, so I thought it would be [...]

Google’s Chrome - No Thanks!

There has been a heck of a lot of buzz about Google’s new web browser Chrome. I’m a huge fan of Mozilla Firefox and wouldn’t really consider switching as Firefox3 has some very cool features, however I do like the idea of someone challenging Microsoft. Competition is very healthy and you only have to look [...]

SuperDuper: Mac Backup Software

During the process of upgrading my MacBook hard drive I needed some software to copy my original drive over to my new hard drive. This is no easy task because the new drive needs to be bootable and if possible, a complete replica of my original drive (otherwise it would take hours if not days [...]

Spare parts

OK, so since the re-jig of the house network, I’ve got a fair few things which are redundant. I’m trying to make use of all of them, here’s a list of what I’ve got and what I’m doing with them:
1 x Shuttle XPC : Using for a FreeNAS installation as a NAS box.
1 x Server [...]

FreeNAS: A FreeBSD distro for NAS installation

I decided to do a bit of “jiggery pokery” today with some old hardware we had lying around at home. I wanted to see if I could easily create my own NAS box. It makes sense to use old hardware and a nice Shuttle XPC was sitting in front of me!
Yesterday I did some Googling [...]

The Strangers (spoiler warning)

This is almost certainly the worst film I have seen in weeks!
The basic story: people go to house, nasty people pop up as if from nowhere as soon as the music calms down for the first time in 10 minutes. People eventually get killed in the last minute of the film.
Sorry if I ruined the [...]

Hellboy II - The Golden Army

I saw this with Chris on Sunday morning and I have to say, it was awesome. Well it was awesome compared to the first one!
Basically there is a golden army controlled by a load of elves who decide to take over the world… who are controlled buy a golden crown which controls them… and Hellboy [...]

An amazing weekend! Congratulations Ruth & Tom Cumming!

Well, this weekend has been very busy… but it’s been absolutely amazing. The ceremony went without a hitch and the reception was great. The speeches were all very good and we’ve even recorded them - so anyone who wants to hear Dad’s German again, get in touch with me ;-). (Actually, maybe check out YouTube soon…)
Anyway, I [...]
