I often travel on the M6, at least twice a month. The M6 constantly has roadworks in which they impose a speed limit of 40 mph, and is monitored by average speed checks.
I’m always amazed when I travel through these sections of roadworks by the number of people who do not understand the word “Average”. Loads of drivers acknowledge the speed cameras and slow down for just the section in which the camera is, however the average speed checks do exactly what it says on the tin!

How it works is, CCTV cameras monitoring the traffic recognise your numberplate as  your enter the speed check zone and record it along with the time. Further along the route other CCTV cameras repeat this operation producing a list of times for each vehicle at each camera. The computer controlling the CCTV cameras knows the distance between each camera, and therefore can easily calculate your average speed.
So, if you enter the zone at 12.00 and leave the zone at 12.01 and the distance between each point is 1 mile, you have an average speed of 60mph.

A common misconception is that each camera takes your speed and then an average of the two is taken. This is wrong, it doesn’t matter how fast you pass the cameras. For example, you could be going at 60mph as you enter the zone and continue at this speed for 30 seconds, then drive at 20mph for 30 seconds and your average speed would still only be 40mph.

There really is no way of cheating these cameras!

Well, I’m currently right in the middle of my exams. 3 down, 4 to go with one this afternoon. It’s going pretty well to be honest - not amazingly, but I am hoping it’s enough to get a decent-ish mark! This year is graded Fail, Pass, Merit, Distinction and so I am aiming around the Merit area.

Today’s morning exam was quite funny because there was one part of a question which I didn’t choose which asked whether a cuboid or a sphere would be best to approximate a Giraffe and an Elephant! Pretty random eh!

I really can’t wait until my exams are over because then I will be able to get down to writing my report properly and back drinking the beer! I’ve been off it for almost 3 weeks now and it’s been good, but I sure do miss the ale!

Hope everyone else’s revision / exams are going well!

Just heard some great news - “The Alex Show, With Adam” is back on RaW on Sunday’s at 11.00am, but every single week now!

Yes, RaW have finally recognised the genius that is the show and given us a more regular slot. Please check us out on Sunday, and get in touch…otherwise it’s going to be me and Adam sitting and talking to ourselves. Which, granted, is pretty entertaining, but not as much fun for us.

Head over to www.radio.warwick.ac.uk for information etc, etc.

I should blame Adam, all my dreams were relatively normal until he started going on about his!

I had a dream last night that I was in the NYPD and had to investigate a series of grisly murders…which were all caused by people’s jeans shrinking.

I didn’t fin out who did it…

I was looking through the incoming links on my WordPress dashboard the other day and noticed a link from the BBC so I thought I’d check it out.

It turns out the BBC spotted StudentBlogs.co.uk and placed it on one of their posts: Blogging About Blogging

StudentBlogs.co.uk is just getting started and is just something I’m doing in my spare time, however I’m hoping it can be a bit of a social experiment, producing a reflection of student lives all over the UK. If your interested in getting involved, let me know using the Student Blogs BlogRoll page

Perfect Stranger

I saw this yesterday, It was good, but wasnt brilliant. There could have been some real character building, but without that although enjoyable it didnt feel quite right. Bruce Willis had loads of potential but his character didnt really make any effect on the film, he just felt a bit like an extra. Halle Berry was good but the ending was kind of weird. I think the best performance goes to Giovanni Ribisi (Gone in Sixty Seconds) who was just a bit weird but well acted. Worth seeing, but i would wait for the DVD.

Shooter

I seem to have seen a lot of very good films recently. If you like Bourne you would love this. Its different but it has a similar feeling of a man wronged, and also being incredibly hard and able to take on the world! It is a pure action movie with lots of guns and explosions and speeding cars. If you like that you will love this.

300

Ok so these reviews are not the most detailed, but thats because i forgot to write them and only have the general feeling i came away with now. 300 was fantastic. If you didnt like Sin City it shouldnt matter too much, this is different. The guy who plays the King was the Phatom of the Opera, which is a totally unrelated piece of info, but i think its cool cos i like him! He has a fantastic voice and the main thing i came away with was ‘This is SPARTA!!!!’ which i think irritated Paul after a while. Anyway if you havnt seen it yet definatly worth seeing, the colour and the setting far outway the story but it doesnt matter as it kind of helps make the story semi irrelevant.

Becoming Jane

Paul hated this, but then considering how much he loved Pride and Prejudice its not really suprising! I however thought it was fantastic. A real romantic story that shows up a lot of Jane Austins stories in her own life. James McAvoy and Anne Hathaway were a brilliant pairing and if you like anything Jane Austin, or just want to see a romantic film i would advice you go see this!
